Photographic Essays

Time.com has an area of the website devoted photographic essays ranging in topic from the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Led Zeppelin, finding a great steak, to Barack Obama. The photographic style of these reports adds a certain amount of depth to subjects that have been covered in many different ways. Pictures have the ability of capturing one's attention and drawing one into the subject matter. A photo-essay can provide the audience with details that words cannot express. The combination of music and pictures, as in the Led Zeppelin piece, create an entirely new way to take in information. My favorite is the piece on Pearl Harbor; the raw pictures take me to an understanding beyond any history book, while the captions complete the story.

Tiny Dancer

This is one of my favorite photos. I love the carefree spirit that is captured here: the bubbly look of the dress, the one foot off the ground and her fingers in the air. And the best part is how much little Madelyn enjoyed having her picture taken!

Colorful

The zoo is one of my favorite places. I love the aviary because of all the beautiful colors of the birds.

Snow

Snow has a lovely effect; it makes everything look fresh and new-almost magical. I love capturing this quality on camera.

Fall Colors

My parents have taught me to appreciate the beauty of fall. I took advantage of the beautiful colors in Bloomington, IN. I love when I find a bright red or orange tree next to a green tree, as in the bottom picture.

Roses

The main reason I love digital photography is the ability to use the computer to enhance photographs. I feel that sometimes a picture becomes a piece of artwork only after it has been digitally altered. I also enjoy taking traditional print pictures, and the darkroom serves as the computer in a way-what is done in the darkroom totally transforms the image on the negative into artwork. The two pictures in this post are of a bouquet of roses. I like the effect of the light coming from the windows behind. Both pictures are enhanced-I altered the brightness and contrast effects on both and changed the color saturation on the top picture.
